Mar a Lago

To follow up my tweet

I have not seen anyone expressing this fact. It is true that a search warrant issued to search a former president's home is unprecedented, but it was preceded by unprecedented, unlawful, actions of a former president never before seen in over 240 years.

Do not forget or dismiss all of the previous actions taken by the former president and his co-conspirators, trying to play cute with our laws and what was considered acceptable. Now we see Trump defenders saying how he is persecuted, when last week they were saying; see its all the congressional committee pursuing political goals and pointing to DOJ inaction as proof.

It is sad that it has come to this but that is the consequence of electing a bad actor president.

Putin’s War

I have been quiet for a while but this video is a must see to understand Russia, Putin's Road to War (full documentary) | FRONTLINE - YouTube It is hard to take a long view considering the atrocities being committed every day but only by understanding the bigger picture can we hope to avoid war in the future. Bottom line as soon as a monster like Putin is recognized democracies around the world must act in concert to get rid of them. When Putin usurped democracy in Russia the handwriting was on the wall and now we all suffer. He appeared at the time to be a Russian problem but lack of support for his opposition in Russia ultimately led us to Ukraine. Can we ever learn to rid ourselves of these autocrats foreign or domestic? The crime of autocracy or attempted autocracy should be the death penalty.

Voting Rights

Further commentary on our divided country. Today the issues are the filibuster question and voting rights. In my last blog I said, “Every political device that games the other party may be a short-term political victory but is a blow to a functional democracy.” I point to Mitch McConnel’s gamesmanship over the supreme court nominations he and his party blocked during the Obama presidency. That is how we ended up with the lopsided court we have now. I bring up the court because the voting rights issue is a rehash of the same questions that were resolved under LBJ with the 15th amendment to the constitution and partially walked back with the Shelby County v. Holder decision by the SCOTUS (supreme court of the United States) in 2013. Reading that decision informs us that the voters must be ever vigilant and take issues to the DOJ in a timely fashion is order to get relief. It comes down to a state’s rights argument then and now. Do the states individually or the federal government have the authority to pass laws regarding voting rights? The 15th amendment provided that the federal government could force the states to allow all citizens access to the voting booth. The Shelby county decision said that was an overreach and voters would have to bring specific issues to the DOJ weakening the voting rights act. Without that decision most of the recent restrictive measures would be thrown out.

I believe that the voters in each state need to get busy and counteract the damage that is being done through redistricting and making it more difficult to vote. Lawyers need to submit issues to the DOJ. I think the voters in each state need to solve the problem. If a state legislature is stacked with wrong thinking politicians, then vote them out. For 2022 everyone needs to go the extra mile and overcome the barriers that have been put in place. It can be done and then use their vote to correct the state legislatures. IT MUST BE DONE!! I can’t imagine people voting for politicians who put them through the misery of having to jump through hoops to vote. Demonstrate the majority at the state level and we will get past the gridlock in DC. If the margin was wider in the house and the senate, we could have what the polls say the majority of Americans want. We can reduce the influence of big money over politics. Money does it’s work but the final power is with the people.

It is difficult and time consuming to try to keep up with the constant barrage of politics. It can be fixed if you make the right choices for your representatives and hold them accountable. The problem at the local and state level is far more manageable but IT MUST BE DONE!! Urge whichever party you are aligned with to spend their energy and money at the local level instead of sending it all to Washington. Take care of the local level and Washington won’t be a problem. Democrats need to do better. Grass roots activity by the GOP is what got us to where we are now.

Start by determining where your elected officials stand on the big lie. If they continue to parrot the demagogue then vote them out. He(45) will never admit he lost the election. Other legislators in his party won the election. If the election was stolen how did that happen? VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE!!!!

Sesame Street

Edit with Pagelayer

I believe that the real divide in the country is between those who feel they are losing something and those who feel that long overdue change is positive and necessary. While depending on where you are on that question may influence your political affiliation, but we must stop calling it Democrats vs Republicans and both parties must remember that their first obligation is to govern which requires working together. It does not matter what your point of view is, gridlock is the worst outcome. Every political device that games the other party may be a short-term political victory but is a blow to a functional democracy. Politicians who forget this must be removed.

We are no longer considered to be in the top 10 democracies in the world we are number 24. This is not Democrats or Republicans this is the world’s view of us. Democracy Countries 2021 (worldpopulationreview.com). I want to add here that I rely on mediabiasfactcheck.com) to evaluate sources and strongly recommend you do the same. We are losing our place as the shining example of democratic government. By the way, the USA is now ranked 44th in the world as having a free press by Reporters Without Borders. This is primarily due to lack of veracity and partisan slant in our press.

OK let me get back to what inspired this blog. CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference) is either a blessing or a curse depending on your point of view. This link shows that divide. Remember that Sesame Street was banned in Mississippi 52 years ago over the racial diversity it depicted ‘B’ is for ‘banned:’ Mississippi’s historic battle with Sesame Street (wlox.com). Here we are again. Leading conservative calls PBS 'insane' over Asian American muppet | TheHill CPAC finds fault with the show because of the inclusion of the new Asian character and because Big Bird is pro Covid vaccine. These are negative things for children to be exposed to???? I am not making this up.
